I-20 Extension

The I-20 Program Date Extension is intended for F-1 students who are not able to complete all degree requirements to graduate by the program end date listed on the I-20 Form. I-20 Extension requests may be granted for the following reasons: 

  • Change of Major 
  • Medical Reason (must provide medical documentation) 
  • Unforeseen Circumstances 

Delays caused by academic probation or suspensions are not an acceptable reason for program extension.  

Students whose I-20 expires in 60 days or less and will be unable to complete their studies may be eligible to request an Extension of Stay. 

I-20 Extension Eligibility guidelines: 

  • Extension requests can be granted only if the student is maintaining his/her status and making progress toward completing his/her educational objective 
  • Student must have continually maintained legal status 
  • Submit an I-20 Extension request 60 days or less of your current I-20 expiration date 
  • I-20 Extension is granted for up to 1 year 
  • New Financial Support Documents are required 
  • Please contact the Center for International Programs to request a program extension
