Music History

  • Experience an Evolution of Music

Music history courses offered at SPC encompass topics and periods ranging from the music of the ancient world to those of contemporary music in a global environment. Our music history courses provide students with knowledge of significant works of music and their historical developments.

Our courses focus on how to listen to the various styles of music and to develop methods of analysis. They also consider various methods of approach: the aesthetics, cultural and social interpretations of major movements. Critical inquiry and analytical thinking are essential components of the field that are further developed in these courses.

  • Music History classes can help satisfy the general education or elective requirements for the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree.
  • A liberal arts education with courses in Music History can serve as the foundation for advanced degrees and professions such as law, business, teaching, musical performance, music composition, music directing and producing and music therapy.
