Comprehensive Standard 3.4.11
Academic Program Coordination
For each major in a degree program, the institution assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field. In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration.
Judgment of Compliance: Compliance
Narrative/Justification for Judgment of Compliance:
All program/curricular areas at St. Petersburg College (SPC) have academically qualified faculty members who serve as program coordinators and work in tandem with their Dean or Provost to coordinate and oversee curriculum development and review as outlined in the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Manual (p. 1) for their assigned discipline. All academic program coordinators meet the required academic qualifications for their assigned discipline, following the Faculty Credentialing Guidelines for Lower Division and Upper Division. Credentialing is initiated by the Dean and documented in the Human Resources department as summarized in the Academic Program Coordinator Roster listed below.
SPC has 21 curricular areas that are managed by a Dean, or in one case a Provost (Phil Nicotera, MD in charge of several health science programs; see CS 3.2.8 for credentials), who acts as "program administrator," as outlined in the Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) Manual (p. 2, #2) and the CurricUNET workflows. Each Dean, or Provost, oversees the academic programs/disciplines within his/her curricular area and identifies academically qualified full-time faculty members to serve as academic program coordinators for each specific academic program/discipline. Deans, or the one Provost, work in collaboration with academic program coordinators and other faculty members to make curriculum decisions. Many academic program coordinators also serve as Academic Chairs or Instructors-in-Charge.
Curriculum development and review practices are consistent regardless of teaching modality (face-to-face, student choice, or online deliveries), and Dean/Provost/academic program coordinator monitoring and approval are facilitated through SPC's electronic curriculum management system, CurricUNET. This includes creating new programs, program modification, creating new courses, and course modifications. Academic program coordinator responsibilities include working with his/her Dean and other faculty during periodic course and program review and serving on the Curriculum & Instruction Committee (C&I Manual p. 2, #5) to ensure academic quality, structural integrity, articulation assurance, and student focus.
